Rear Brake Pad Replacement in Artarmon — Including Electronic Parking Brake Service

Rear brake pad replacement sounds simple — and on older vehicles it is. But on most modern European cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen) and many newer Asian vehicles, the rear brakes incorporate an electronic parking brake (EPB) that must be retracted using diagnostic software before the new pads can be fitted. At Brumby Motors in Artarmon, we have the tools and experience to do this correctly.

How Rear Brake Pads Wear

Rear brake pads typically wear more slowly than front pads because the front brakes do the majority of braking work (up to 70% on most cars). However, on vehicles with aggressive torque vectoring or where the handbrake is used frequently, rear wear can accelerate. We inspect rear brake pad thickness at every service.

Signs Your Rear Brakes Need Attention

  • Squealing from the rear when braking
  • Grinding noise from the rear — metal-on-metal contact
  • Brake warning light on the dashboard
  • Car pulling to one side under braking — may indicate uneven rear pad wear
  • Rear brake warning notification on European car dashboard

Our Rear Brake Service

  • Rear brake pad removal and replacement
  • Electronic parking brake retraction and reset using diagnostic tool
  • Rear rotor inspection — replacement if below minimum thickness
  • Calliper inspection — slide pins, rubber boots, freedom of movement
  • Brake fluid condition check — recommend flush if due
  • Road test — confirm correct operation and parking brake engagement

Why Electronic Parking Brake Matters

On vehicles with an electric parking brake motor built into the rear calliper, the motor-driven piston must be retracted electronically before pad removal. Forcing it back mechanically (as you would on an older car) will damage the motor. Once new pads are fitted, the system must be reset so the parking brake applies correctly. We perform this procedure on all affected vehicles as standard.

Frequently Asked Questions — Rear Brake Pads Artarmon

Q: Do rear brake pads wear at the same rate as front pads?

A: Generally no — front pads wear faster (usually 2–3 times faster) because fronts do most of the braking work. On performance vehicles with more balanced brake bias, the difference is smaller. We track both front and rear pad thickness at every service.

Q: My BMW shows a ‘brake pad wear’ warning — what does it mean?

A: BMW (and many European vehicles) fit electronic brake pad wear sensors that trigger a dashboard warning when the pad reaches minimum thickness. Once this warning appears, replacement should be scheduled promptly — the pads are at their limit.

Q: Can I replace just the rear pads without replacing the rotors?

A: If the rear rotors are within minimum thickness and show no significant scoring or heat cracking, yes. We measure rotor thickness and inspect condition before recommending rotor replacement. We’ll show you what we find.
